True stories of murder and mayhem reign in the gripping Crime Classics, a performance which unites the Chicago Philharmonic Chamber Players with Chicago Senior Radio Players for two episodes. A radio docudrama from the 1950s, “Crime Classics” dramatized true stories of dastardly deeds from history.

Originally narrated and acted by famous radio stars of the day, Academy Award-winning composer Bernard Herrmann provided the score for the episodes. Herrmann, known for composing for such famous films as Psycho, Vertigo, North by Northwest, Citizen Kane, Taxi Driver, Journey to the Center of the Earth, duplicated authentic music from the era of the story.

The first episode, The Death of a Picture Hanger, tells the tale of the outlaw gang leader Jesse James and his assassination at the hands of the Ford Brothers. The second episode follows the swindling, murderous pirates as they cut a treacherous path across the world before receiving their comeuppance.

Dialogue and narration is performed by actors from the Chicago Senior Radio Players, while the Chamber Players provide the soundtrack and sound effects in this unique concert.
