Chicago Philharmonic Violinist Carol Setapen

Carol SetapenQ. What inspired you to pursue music as a career?

A. My final commitment to choosing music as a career came in my second year of college. Although I never stopped playing or taking lessons, I was a mathematics major for a short time. Although math was stimulating in some ways, It literally felt as if I was not using a part of my brain. I returned to my first love – music – and have never regretted it.

Q. What do you like most about the CPO’s ensemble approach to creating music?

A. I truly enjoy working with the CPO’s first class musicians and the enthusiastic desire of everyone to bring the music to life. I love to feel the power of a large orchestra and being a part of that.

Q. What new endeavors would you like to see the CPO pursue in the future?

A. I would like to find new ways to broaden the base of support for the orchestra. Specifically, to make classical music a “can’t miss” experience for a larger demographic.
