2013-2014 Season

2013-2014 Season: The Romantic Impulse

Join us this season as we explore music of the Romantic Era and beyond. This theme connects our offerings from chamber work to full orchestral compositions, featuring composers such as Verdi, Wagner, Strauss, Mendelsshon and those later influenced by this era like Stravinsky and Prokofiev.  This season, we offer our subscription series of five orchestral concerts.  Our Chicago Philharmonic Chamber Players will perform nine chamber music recitals.  As the official orchestra of the Joffrey Ballet, we will perform dozens of times with this beloved Chicago Institution.  We can’t wait to have you join us!

Scott Speck, Conductor; Benjamin Beilman, Violin
On Mother’s Day, Scott Speck returns for Romantic Rapture, an evening of great Romantic and post-Romantic masterworks. Guest violinist Benjamin Beilman, 2012 Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient and alumnus of the Music Institute of Chicago, woos our audience with the singing strains of Felix Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto. In celebration of Verdi’s 200th birthday, we perform the Overture to his opera La forza del destino.  We also present highlights of Sergei Prokofiev’s most brilliant ballet, Romeo and Juliet.  Specially selected actors from Chicago Shakespeare Theater perform highlights from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, portraying the most famous young lovers in theater history.
