This program, presented through the Chicago Park District’s “Night Out in the Parks” initiative, brings side-by-side symphonic concerts to Chicago parks in local communities. Students and community members are invited to bring their instruments and collaborate with Chicago Philharmonic musicians in rehearsing and performing free concerts for members of the community and the general public. This initiative launched in 2015 with events at Ping Tom Memorial Park in Chinatown and the Columbus Park Refectory in the Austin community. In 2016 over 265 community musicians, ranging in age from 11 to 77, performed with our orchestra, and close to 900 neighbors, community partners, and friends came out to watch the performances.
This summer, Side by Side with the Chicago Philharmonic has expanded to four spectacular locations:
- Columbus Park Refectory – June 24 2017
- Ping Tom Memorial Park – July 8 2017
- Humboldt Park Boathouse – August 5 2017
- South Shore Cultural Center – August 13 2017
At each location, rehearsals are at 3:30-5:30pm, and concerts are at 6pm. The repertoire will be as follows:
Key – Star Spangled Banner
Suppé – Light Cavalry Overture
Copland – Hoe-Down
Anderson – Syncopated Clock
Bizet – Selections from Carmen Suite No. 1
Williams – Leia’s Song
Holst – “Mars” from The Planets
Bernstein/Mason – WSS Medley
Lowden – Armed Forces Salute
Sousa – Stars and Stripes Forever
All concerts are free and open to the public – we recommend bringing lawn chairs and a picnic!
Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis, so hurry to reserve your spot!
